SINGAPORE SINGAPORE SINGAPORE (2024 - 2025) is a series of lens-based artworks which engages with the unknown history of Singapore, Michigan, a buried settlement in the Midwestern region of America that was poised to be a port town. In particular, it bears an uncanny name to the original Southeast Asian Island state of Singapore. The series focuses on the performative act of making sense of a place and its history as informed by the positionality of a Singaporean artist in America. Moving beyond the sole emphasis on an “origin story,” the series meditates on the overlapped relations between naming, erasure and “excess.”
